Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

We have a busy and exciting Spring term lined up.  We will keep this page updated regularly with what we have been learning in Year 4.

P.E will be on a Tuesday this term, so please make sure all children have a labelled PE kit (white t-shirt, blue/black shorts and black pumps).

You will find our Spring planner below detailing some of the activities the children will be doing this term.
Homework will be given out every Tuesday, to be returned the following Tuesday.  Parents and Carers are encouraged to read with their child every night and ensure reading logs are signed.

Year 4 have just chosen their new class novel for the Spring term.
We held a 'World Cup of Books' and got down to 3 finalists.
Children had to choose between 'The Creakers', 'A series of unfortunate events' and 'Pugs of the frozen north'.  The children were drawn in by the illustrations of 'Pugs of the frozen north' so that was their winner!
In SMSC we have been discussing where adults get their money, and exploring reasons why people work.  We discussed the various reasons people worked together and rated them from 'most important' to 'least important'.  There was some great dialogue!
In Science we have been learning about changing states.  We have set up a fair test looking at how quickly ice melts depending on its shape and recorded our results in a bar graph.
In Geography, we have been learning how to use atlases and locating different places in the UK.  We have also been learning about the differences between human and physical geography.
We took part in some role play while learning about Boudicca's rebellion.
Each class in KS2 answers a weekly 'Thunk'.  We focus on quality discussion and reasoning when answering these questions.
We have thoroughly enjoyed reading Oliver and the Seawigs this term.  In art, we made our own Seawigs and in English we focused on writing poetry, letters and diary entries.  We loved making sea monkey chants using percussion instruments, although it was very noisy!

We wrote some reviews of the story and Miss Platt uploaded some of them on amazon, click the link to check them out:

We began the Autumn term reading 'Charlotte's Web'.
We listened to a setting description of the Zuckerman's barn and sketched how we thought it might look inside.  We then described the sights, sounds and smells our barns to our partners.

Year 4 have been learning about search engines.  We learnt all about how ‘web crawlers’ search the word wide web to make an index of web pages.  Working in pairs, we then started to index a small portion of the web based around computing.

In Spanish, we have been learning which countries speak the language and practising how to give directions to different places in town.
The spellings for Spring can be found below.  Children are expected to practice spellings using 'look, cover, write, check' and there will be a spelling test every Tuesday.
