Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!
We have a busy and exciting Summer term lined up.  We will keep this page updated regularly with what we have been learning in Year 2.
P.E will be on a Monday this term, so please make sure all children have a labelled PE kit (white t-shirt, blue/black shorts and black pumps).
You will find our Summer planner below detailing some of the activities the children will be doing this term.

26th April 2017

Year 2 visited Tesco as part of their ‘Farm to Fork’ scheme.  We learnt a lot about healthy food and how to eat a balanced diet.

We learnt that all food has to be farmed, grown or caught as well as how much sugar we should have in our diet.

Did you know that a portion of Shreddies has 12 grams of sugar?  We were shocked!

We chose some healthy ingredients to make our own breakfast cereal and also tried lots of new foods.  We had a fantastic morning.

We have been researching Blue Whales and made an information page using Book Creator.
Y2 have begun the Spring term learning about habitats. We explored our eco garden and tried to identify different plants, trees and animals.
We bought our favourite books in on World Book Day and enjoying sharing and reading them to each other.
In Science, we investigated materials.
We described the properties of the materials and played 'What am I?' to see if the rest of the class could guess the mystery object.
Year 2 used PicCollage during their Science lesson to show different types of movement including bending, twisting and stretching.
Maths in Year 2
We have been learning more about place value and number so far this term.  We are practising our number bonds to 10, 20 and 100.
We have been doing a lot of problem solving and reasoning activities to really get us thinking!
As well as problem solving, we have been learning about shape and have learnt a lot of new vocabulary.
Ask us what tessellation is, or what makes a shape symmetrical.  We also learnt what a right angle was and the properties of a quadrilateral.
We began the Autumn term reading 'Diary of a Killer Cat' by Anne Fine as well as 'Fantastic Mr Fox' by Roald Dahl, two great stories which the children are enjoying so far.
Our topic is 'The Great Fire of London' and later in the term we will get to make our own pizzas!
We are reading 'Diary of a Killer Cat' and had a debate on whether we thought Tuffy was a 'murderer of rabbits' or not.  Hear some of the children's views below:
We read 'The Robot and the Bluebird' and enjoyed collecting vocabulary, role playing as characters from the story and writing setting descriptions.  We completed KWL grids about Bluebirds then carried out some research to find the answers to our questions.
Thursday 6th October was National Poetry Day.  Year 2 have spent a number of  weeks reciting well known poems as well as writing some of our own.  We used actions to go with each poem and are getting very good at learning them off by heart.
We celebrated what would have been Roald Dahl's 100th Birthday on 13th September. We learnt about his life and some of the books he wrote.  Look at our fantastic costumes!
In SMSC we have been discussing how we are 'fantastic'.  We all chose a skill or talent we have discussed why this makes us special.
In the Autumn term, we learnt about symbols of importance in Hinduism.  We have made Diva lamps, mehndi and Rangoli patterns.
We created art work representing the 'Great Fire of London'.
